The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) has formally initiated a Section 337 investigation regarding alleged patent infringements involving powered rocker-recliner and glider-recliner components. This legal proceeding follows a complaint submitted by North Carolina-based Ultra-Mek, Incorporated, alongside Missouri firms Leggett & Platt, Incorporated and L&P Property Management Company. Following an initial filing on August 21, 2026, the case records were updated with new submissions on September 10 and September 9, 2026. At the core of the dispute is the claim that specific imported seating mechanisms and finished products violate provisions of the Tariff Act of 1930. The complainants have requested that the USITC implement a limited exclusion order and issue cease and desist orders to block the sale and importation of the contested goods. The commission has named eleven respondents in this case, including entities based in the United States, China, Singapore, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. Ltd. is among the entities identified by the commission, alongside Jiangsu Carya Smart Home Hardware Co., Ltd. is one of the enterprises highlighted by the commission., Ltd., Living Style Group Ltd., True Innovations & Design (USA) LLC, Living Style (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., and Living Style (Vietnam) Ltd. Other respondents are Henglin Home Furnishings Co., Ltd., Nanjing Hengning Home Furnishings Co., Zhejiang Hengjian Home Furnishing Co. Ltd., Colamy, Inc., Aurora Maison, Inc., and Aerisnexus Innovations, Inc. The initiation of investigation 337-TA-1524 does not signify a final judgment on the merits of the allegations. The agency’s Chief Administrative Law Judge is tasked with assigning the matter to an administrative law judge (ALJ), who will oversee the evidentiary hearing process. Following this hearing, the presiding ALJ will issue an initial determination, which remains subject to subsequent commission review. The USITC expects to establish a specific target date for final resolution within 45 days of the investigation launch. If remedial orders are issued, they generally take effect immediately, becoming final after 60 days unless the U.S. Trade Representative intervenes for policy reasons. For insurance carriers and liability underwriters, these developments underscore the importance of monitoring supply chain and intellectual property litigation. Patent disputes involving international manufacturing entities can lead to significant market disruption and inventory volatility, which may impact business interruption coverage or professional indemnity policies for affected importers and distributors.
