The American Public Works Association (APWA) has launched its application process for the Fall 2026 New Initiatives Program. This program invites members and chapters to propose creative projects that aim to advance the public works sector and support the organization’s overarching strategic objectives.
In a departure from previous years, the association has implemented a two-phase review structure to streamline the submission experience. Interested participants must first submit a concise Phase 1 application by November 12, 2026. This preliminary stage requires a summary of project goals and specific needs. Applicants must also describe the projected impact and alignment with the APWA Strategic Plan.
Now in its fourth year, the initiative serves as a platform for entrepreneurial ideas meant to improve member services, professional education, and industry engagement. Success stories include various collaborative efforts. The Sacramento Chapter and the San Diego Imperial County Chapter acted as hosts for these workforce development initiatives. Meanwhile, the Georgia Chapter organized a vendor engagement reverse trade show. The San Diego project specifically reached students in grades 4-12 to generate interest in public works careers.
“The New Initiatives Committee strives to help our members bring forward bold, creative concepts that will shape the future of public works.” Jeffrey Brown, PE, represents the APWA Finance Committee and serves as the New Initiatives Committee Chair. “If you have an idea that can elevate our profession—whether through innovation, technology, chapter engagement, education, or any other way—we want to hear from you. I strongly encourage members to apply and share their vision for what’s next.”
Submissions for the first phase will be evaluated on several criteria, including innovation, feasibility, potential member value, and adherence to the organization’s strategic goals. Those whose preliminary proposals are selected will be invited to submit a comprehensive Phase 2 plan. The organization expects to finalize and announce the successful funding recipients in February 2027. For insurance professionals and risk managers monitoring infrastructure and public sector operations, these funded initiatives represent emerging trends in community engagement and workforce training that often inform future professional standards.
